AEO and GEO checklist for brands in 2026
Answer engines quote pages that state the answer plainly. Most brand pages do not.
What changed
A growing share of searches now end in an answer rather than a click. That does not remove the value of a page — it changes what the page has to do. It must be quotable.
Quotable means the answer appears near the top, in a complete sentence, attributable to an identifiable organisation with evidence behind it.
The checklist
Fourteen items. Every one is verifiable in an afternoon.
- 01State the direct answer within the first 120 words of the page.
- 02Use one question per heading, phrased the way a buyer would ask it.
- 03Keep answers self-contained — no reliance on the paragraph above.
- 04Publish figures with a date and a source qualifier.
- 05Name the author, their role and their expertise.
- 06Mark up organisation, article, FAQ and product data.
- 07Give every claim a page it can be cited from.
- 08Keep one canonical page per query intent.
- 09Ensure the answer is in the HTML, not injected by script.
- 10Add original data, screenshots or media a model cannot paraphrase away.
- 11Cross-link to the service or case page the answer implies.
- 12Keep page titles literal, not clever.
- 13Update the published date only when the content actually changes.
- 14Test the page by asking an answer engine the question it targets.
The direct answer
If you do only three of the fourteen, do these: state the answer in the opening paragraph, publish original data with its date, and make sure the content is server-rendered. Those three cover most of the gap between a page that gets quoted and one that does not.
